Inside Buddy Foster's World

Reblog: Delusion, Dejection, Determination

Another reblog of Buddy’s early life.

Life is not a field of catnip. The world does not revolve around Buddy Foster. There is no kitty spa.

I am a foster cat.

foster cat kitty spa

I thought I was at the kitty spa.

The past two weeks have been a journey to self-actualization. I have gone through the three stages of foster cat acceptance – delusion, dejection, determination. (Hereafter to be known as the Buddy Foster Model of Foster Cat Actualization.) The trauma of separation from Mommy and Poppy, internment in a dog infested prison, and installation in a new home all took their toll on my psyche.  To deal with this never  – before – known stress I became delusional, then dejected before I finally became determined to see life as it is.

Last week I spent at the “kitty spa”.(See my last post.)  My poor brain in an attempt to make sense of what was happening to me, convinced me that the house I was in was actually a spa for privileged cats. I deluded myself into thinking that I was on vacation. Perhaps I needed this.  It allowed my mind and body to rest and to live through an otherwise stressful period.  The self has its own ways of helping us through those difficult times.

Dejected, Melancholic

A few days ago I came to my senses. I knew where and what I was.  Dejection, melancholy, depression are just a few words to describe my mood.  My feelings changed.  My behaviour changed with them.  I am embarrassed now when I think of how I acted. I jumped on tables with the intention of breaking household bric – a – brac, and, in fact, did topple and break a glass bowl.  I am so ashamed when I think of how my new mommy didn’t scold me, just swept up the pieces so I wouldn’t cut my paws.  I bit mommy several times (but, of course, I never break the skin, just cover fingers with my teeth and look mad). I threw up three times intentionally, once on the living room rug.  Again, Mommy was so kind and concerned for me.  Even the man didn’t get upset but he had no intention of cleaning it up.

Planning to throw up on floor

A few days ago I experienced an epiphany. I had just snuggled with New Mommy, eaten my favourite canned gourmet food and was luxuriating in the French Provincial chair assigned to my sole use, watching a bedraggled cat hide under a bush to escape the blustering storm.  Bazinga!  I had it pretty good! I belonged to that class of privileged cat destined to be forever cared for by man(or woman).  I was in the system.  My life was laid out for me.  All I had to do was be relatively adorable and not too nippy and humans would be forever at my beck and call.  I still missed Old Mommy and Poppy but I had found a good home and if I am adopted, New Mommy will make sure it is to a nice family with no other pets and no children.

Life at times seems unbearable for us all but we must be thankful for what we have and work hard to improve it.

I am Buddy Foster and I am a contented cat.

I think after four years Buddy has found his forever with his once foster family. He is happy indeed to come full circle as the King of this castle. 💜

We adopted Buddy since we found it impossible to part with him. He is so precious to us.

How could you not?! I’ve only had one mancat and he was my one and only attempt at fostering- which obviously failed. It was meant to I believe and we had fourteen wonderful years with him- he made it to age 16 despite being a former feral with FIV.
He was the sweetest boy and proof that feral cats are worthy and need love and care too.
I’ve always wanted a ginger boy like Buddy and will get one someday.

Awww but Buddy I think you are what my brother cat who lived here before me and is now at the Bridge was- a foster fail. It doesn’t mean you failed, it means your Mommy took you on as a foster, but in the end can’t give you up. My Mom told me that’s what happened with my angel brother Kaspars and why she cannot foster cats as she is too weak to give one up. She admires people who do it as it saves lives, but she gets too attached.
You are indeed lucky as I know I am, we are well looked after and have no worries. You are a privileged and loved boy- I am so happy you found your home.

That’s an appropriate name -a foster fail. The women who runs the rescue centre where we found Buddy is a very special person. She devotes her life to spaying and neutering strays and cats who have to be given up for some reason, and then finding foster and later adoptive homes for them.
I think you have a very special home, Pearl, with a mommy who loves you. Aren’t we lucky cats!

We are so fortunate indeed! My Mom says Kaspars was a lot like Buddy- very independent, liked things on his terms yet very loving and loyal. The only difference was he grew up with a dog and they were best buds. He even would go on walks with the dog and felt protective of her to other dogs! MEWHAHAHA!

MY SId sends his sincerest meows to Buddy. He knows how it is being adopted. Spring will be here soon and to honor my Sid and my kitty niece Oreo and one or two cats that have shown up in the yard a big pot of catnip will be planted.

I’m sure they’ll love it. It really makes Buddy frisky. I planted cat grass last year but
he took no notice of it.

Yes not all cats do- I’ve had ones who were nip junkies and others who could take it or leave it. Pearl falls in to the latter- she will sniff it but doesn’t always get worked up. She’s naturally hyper so I’m kind of glad she doesn’t get too worked up as then she would be really climbing the walls!
