Guest Post Thursday: Sammie the German Shepherd

Today we have our first doggie guest post by a big dog named Sammie.  Sammie was adopted and saved by her Mommy who has a blog appropriately named Saving Sammie. My mommy loves to read about Sammie and her siblings (Emma, Frou-Frou and Tubby), and I’m sure you would enjoy the blog, too.

Me and Sammie

Hello everyone! I’m glad to introduce you to our almost four-year-old German Shepherd, Sammie. We adopted her from the local animal shelter at the age of two and a half, and she has been an absolute blessing to us ever since.

Unfortunately, we know next to nothing about her life before she came home with us and became a part of our family. To start – she has been a mother, but we don’t know how many puppies she had, where they are now, or how old she was when she had them. Finally – she was surrendered to the shelter twice, and the first time she was adopted, she was returned because she “bothered” the older dog in the home.

Upon adoption, she weighed about 52 pounds and had an ear infection. Now, she weighs closer to 70 pounds and her ears are healthy from a chicken- and grain-free diet. If only we could find a solution to her paw chewing!

Upon adoption, she knew how to sit and kennel, but she didn’t really know what a dog SHOULD know – how to play! It was a couple weeks to a couple months after we got her that she finally took an interest in toys. Now, she loves a good bone or rope ball. She has also added ‘pound it’, ‘down’, and ‘come’ to her list of tricks, although sometimes she prefers to think you’re asking for a shake than for her to lay down…

It’s not been easy, but Saving Sammie has been the best thing that has happened to us. She’s taught us so much, and I can’t imagine our home without her. I’m sure our cats would even admit that they don’t mind having her around! As for her baby sister, Emma – well, she idolizes her and is never too far from her side.

We hope you’ll check in to our blog every now and again to see what we’re up to! We’d love to have you come along with us on our adventures.
