Sundays with Simon and Sammy: The Cat and Mouse Game

Hi.  This is Simon. Today Sammie and I are featuring a poem by Oliver Thornhill’s Great-grandnanny.  It is an after Christmas poem about Ollie’s Great-grandnanny’s former cat, Gus, and a mouse.  The pink writing is the mouse speaking. The green is Gus.

The little mouse could hear them cry,

“A brand new year – we wish you joy.”

“All gifts will soon be packed away,

But ‘here’ is where I want to stay.

I have a plan, I’ve thought it through,

I know just what I have to do.

Now Gus has fur that’s long and grey.

She always likes to get her way.

Although as cute as cute can be,

She won’t be brushed as you can see.

She’d rather have a knotted fur,

Than let a brush untangle her.

Off to her den she’ll run and hide,

And when it’s clear, return outside.

I know old Gus will gladly share.

Her den has lots of room to spare.

I’ll sneak away before too long,

Not leaving clues to where I’ve gone.

Beneath the sofa I will be,

All warm and happy, safe and free.

I’ll size it up to see what’s here.

Is that a mouse I see up there?

A catnip mouse, of that I’m sure,

And there’s another on the floor,

A granny mouse with cap of red,

All stuffed and placed upon her head,

And yet another. Now I see,

Those mice were taken from the tree.

With tiny mice Gus likes to play,

And then she hides them all away.

I’ll keep the secret, you will see.

Their hiding place is safe with me.

That noise -just listen. Hear it roar?

It breaks the record for a snore.

I’ll fix they sound, I’ll fix it now.

I have the thing and know just how.

I have a bouquet in my hand.

It’s held with wire and looks just grand.

I’ll use that wire to scratch her fur,

And Gus will think I’m grooming her.

Just watch her go. She sure can run.

Now slow down Gus, it’s only fun.”

She slid across the slippery floor,

And brought up in the kitchen door.

You tricked me mouse, I know it now.

I’m sorry if I snored too loud.

If “Cat and Mouse” are games you play,

I’ll have my turn another day.
