Inside Buddy Foster's World

Sundays with Simon and Sammie: On a Night of Snow

Hello. This is Simon Killmouseky. Sammie and I have decided to bring you a poem about snow today as we have just experienced a snowstorm (through the apartment windows as we are housecats).  We hear that Buddy was exposed to a driving blast of snow by Nanny in an attempt to rid him of this ridiculous idea of going outdoors in winter. Apparently, Buddy was frightened and will not go near the door.  Who knows how long this will last, though.   Buddy is like the cat in this poem, whereas most cats enjoy the security of being indoors in winter.

On a Night of Snow

Cat, if you go outdoors, you must walk in the snow.
You will come back with little white shoes on your feet,
little white shoes of snow that have heels of sleet.
Stay by the fire, my Cat. Lie still, do not go.
See how the flames are leaping and hissing low,
I will bring you a saucer of milk like a marguerite,
so white and so smooth, so spherical and so sweet –
stay with me, Cat. Outdoors the wild winds blow.

Outdoors the wild winds blow, Mistress, and dark is the night,
strange voices cry in the trees, intoning strange lore,
and more than cats move, lit by our eyes green light,
on silent feet where the meadow grasses hang hoar –
Mistress, there are portents abroad of magic and might,
and things that are yet to be done. Open the door!

I love your poem. I write poetry too. My last cat was Gussie. I made a Christmas book about him called The Cat and Mouse Game! It was written in poetry and I made the book on my computer.

Why not send Simon and Sammie your poem and they can feature it on Sundays with Simon and Sammie.

Hi Brenda, my “Cat And Mouse Game” book was written about my cat, Gussie, who died about 8 years ago at age 20. I wrote the book when she was not so old and very active. The book has 11 pages with pictures one each page. If I typed it without pictures, or maybe a little picture it would have 44 lines. That would probably be too long too or if I typed it in two lines on one page. I will send you a picture of the cover and the first page. And you can let me know. The little Mrs. Santa with the red cap and dress is doing the talking. Claire

This is great, Claire. It doesn’t matter about the length, though. I think the whole thing with the pictures would be great. Or maybe it could even cover two Sundays. It must have been so sad when she died since she was so old for a cat. It is nice that you have something about a former cat because I intend to do a post about Socks and Sassy, too, as a memorial to them. So we could look at it this way for Gussie.

Great. I think it would be hard to work with as pages so I will type it over putting the pictures where they belong and you can do whatever works for you. One of the pictures is of Gussie. Thanks. Claire

So are Socks and Sassy. They still have a place in my heart.

We’d love to read it. Maybe Sammie and I could even feature it on Sundays with Simon and Sammie.

I'd love to hear what you think of this post.
