Inside Buddy Foster's World
I have just gone through a period of depression, lethargy and despondency.
“What!” you are saying. “A depressed cat!”
Of course. Animals have emotions. And animals can suffer from depression.I didn’t know what was happening to me until Mommy explained it.
Here is what Mommy noticed.
I was sleeping more. Cats sleep a lot anyway but Mommy thought I was sleeping more than usual.
Mommy’s friend Carol came to visit and said that she thought I had lost weight.
I was not being as friendly to Mommy and was hissing at her at times when she tried to pet me.
I was grooming myself excessively.
I had been fostered about six weeks before but I seemed to fit into my new home and family quite well. I was perfectly at ease.
But then Mommy realized something! The man had recently left to work outside the province. It was just Mommy and I in the house, no sounds of people talking, no man going in and out and interacting with Mommy and me. Mommy realized that I missed the man, even though he did not spend as much time with me as she did. I watched him a lot. The man was always saying “That cat is looking at me again.” I liked him. I missed him. Once he even took me on his shoulder and walked around with me.
Mommy realized something else. The man always had the TV on so there was noise at all times. Mommy rarely watches TV so it was quiet except when she talked to me or was on the phone.
It is fall and cats can suffer from seasonal depression.
Mommy put all these facts together and decided I might be depressed.
Here’s what she did.
When the man called she let him talk to me. She told me he was coming back.
She turned the TV on more and tried to find things I would like.
She played with me more, talked to me more and groomed me more.
Her friend Val bought me a new toy so I would get more exercise.
I am feeling better now and Mommy didn’t need to take me to the vet and maybe I wasn’t even depressed. But cats can be depressed so keep an eye on your precious ones.
