Today I am a proud and overjoyed kitty. I am overjoyed at making my Mommy happy and proud to have a defined role in my new foster family.
Many people assume that my species expects to be waited on and worshiped, that we take food, shelter, care and love for granted. It is true that we are not like dogs. We will not grovel, kowtow or unwillingly submit to anyone. But any cat lover knows that we can return the love you show us, and, though you may not know it. we long to reciprocate and to give something back to you for all you do for us. Sometimes it is a mouse brought to your doorstep. Today I discovered something even more important that I can do for Mommy and the man – I can be a guard cat.
I had just finished breakfast and was strolling around in the living room, looking for a place to lie in the sun on the hardwood floor, when something orange flashed across the patio door. Thinking it was a leaf from our backyard trees, I walked to the door and looked out. Imagine my surprise when I saw a ferocious orange cat sitting on the patio, starring maliciously at me. I emitted an earth shaking scream.
Mommy ran to me shouting, “Buddy , what’s wrong?”
She stopped when she saw the orange furred creature, her eyes wide with terror. I stood on my back paws and placed my declawed front paws on the glass of the patio door. The monster saw me but seemed to stare right through me. Mommy was petrified. I howled again and ran to the kitchen, looking for a way out although I knew there was none. But I had to defend Mommy. I ran to the patio door again and howled. The cat ran away, stopped, looked back, and left for good.
Mommy said “Buddy! What a brave boy! You saved Mommy from the big cat.”
She patted my head and told the man what happened. Everyone was excited, I most of all.
So, I now have a role in the family as its protector. That’s me, Buddy Foster, guard cat.

She is Soooo proud of me and I am so happy. I showed how brave I was a few days ago by hissing five times at the Eastlink repair man.
