Inside Buddy Foster's World
Today’s posting will tackle the very difficult problem of training your people. I have only begun to make a determined effort to deal with this task this week. Before that I was adjusting to my new life as a foster cat. (See previous posting https://quirkycatsblog.wordpress.com/2015/10/17/delusion-dejection-determination/ ) I have selected three areas to concentrate on and will explain how I dealt with and am continuing to deal with each. The three areas are Nocturnal Routines. Feeding Conventions, Grooming and Petting Etiquette.
Nocturnal sleeping is very important for an indoor cat. Outdoor cats may spend the night hunting but indoor cats simply sleep through the night. If you wish to sleep in your people’s bedroom , you must be persistent. Scratch at their door and meow until they give in which usually occurs within a few nights. New Mommy and R lasted about four nights. Of course, I am declawed and did not injure the door. I do not sleep in their room every night but I know that I can if I wish, and I have exerted my power.
Along with sleeping comes the Waking Routine. I have to admit that I have had little success here. I jump onto the bed when I awake and paw Mommy’s face. Sometimes I touch my nose to her cheek or meoww. She simply says “Good Morning, Buddy” and closes her eyes. I have done this every morning since I have arrived. Although I recommended perseverance, one must also know when to admit defeat. I do not expect to wake Mommy, but I think I will continue this morning routine just because I love to see my people first thing in the morning.
2. Feeding Conventions
This is relatively simple. Eat only what you like. No matter how hungry, do not eat what you do not like. Even throw up if forced to. Any well trained person will soon be serving you only what you like, no matter how expensive.
3. Grooming and Petting Etiquette
The most important thing to remember is you are the boss. Grooming and petting are done on your time, by people you allow to do it,and in the way you prefer. I have a cue to tell Mommy I wish to be petted. I pat my soft declawed paw on her face. She scratches and rubs my head. She stops. I pat. She starts again. She is perfectly trained.
She has also come to realize that if she pets me at other times I will not always be receptive. This is when you bat at someone with your paws(only if declawed) or softly cover their hand with your teeth. I do not advocate real biting. Also, if someone ignores you when you want to be petted, you can softly bite them on the toe. At no time tolerate being ignored. You are and must be the centre of attention.
Cats are a kindly master, just so long as you remember your place.
